C Section – recovery from your Caesarean Birth

C-Section Recovery: What to Expect (First 24 Hours to 6 Weeks)

“I’ve had a C-section… now what?”

This is where expectations really matter. Read our blog on What to Expect from your Caesarean Birth.

Because recovery from a caesarean birth isn’t just:

👉 “rest and you’ll be fine”

It’s:

👉 recovering from major abdominal surgery
👉 while caring for a newborn

The first 24 hours after caesarean birth (this is the toughest bit)

Let’s be honest:

👉 this is the hardest part physically

What you can expect

  • numbness wearing off
  • soreness around your wound
  • feeling restricted in movement

You’ll also have:

Getting up for the first time

No one forgets this. It happens sooner than you expect. Usually 6 hours after your C - section.

👉 It’s not glamorous

You’ll be helped to stand and walk.

It might feel:

  • uncomfortable
  • a bit shocking
  • emotional
  • like your insides are going to fall out! (it's just a sensation!)

But:

👉 it’s one of the best things you can do for recovery after a caesarean

👉 aim to stand upright, with reasonable posture, even though your body is wanting to slouch

👉 those who move gently but regularly recovery quickest (smokers ironically do because although the smoking deters healing, getting up & out for a nicotine fix means they move more!)

Pain relief (take it!)

You’re not expected to “tough it out” after a c section.

👉 stay on top of pain relief

It helps you:

  • move more easily
  • feed your baby
  • recover better

The first week (go slow… seriously)

At home:

👉 this is not the time to “bounce back”

👉 but DO keep moving

Expect:

  • soreness
  • limited mobility
  • needing help
  • stitches (known as sutures) to dissolve or be removed on/around day 5

Things to avoid

  • heavy lifting
  • driving
  • overdoing it

(Yes… even if you feel “fine” on day 3 because your body won't thank you on day 4!)

Weeks 2-6 (this is where people overdo it)

You’ll start to feel:

👉 more like yourself

And this is where the trap is:

👉 doing too much too soon

Healing is still happening:
👉 internally as well as externally

What helps recovery?

  • rest (as much as possible with a newborn…)
  • good nutrition
  • hydration
  • gentle regular movement
  • accepting help

The emotional side (often overlooked)

You might feel:

  • relief
  • gratitude
  • disappointment
  • grief
  • or a mix of everything

All of this is normal.

👉 A Caesarean is not a “lesser” birth

When to seek help

Contact your midwife/GP if you notice:

  • increasing pain
  • redness or discharge
  • fever
  • feeling unwell

The biggest mindset shift

Recovery isn’t about:

👉 “getting back to normal quickly”

It’s about:

👉 healing properly so you’re stronger long-term

The bottom line

For the first:

👉 24 hours → be supported
👉 first week → go slow
👉 first 6 weeks → respect your body

Around 6 weeks for initial recovery, longer for full healing.

Usually after 6 weeks, but check with your provider and insurance.

Yes - very common.

If there’s redness, swelling, discharge, or increasing pain.
